The Monkey Walk – Coalville, LE67 3WD

This pub is named after an interesting and unique piece of Coalville’s history. On Saturdays and Sundays from the 1930s, young single men and women would walk from the Co-Op clock (which is just opposite the pub) to Lashmore’s clock, a short distance across the town on the other side of the Belvoir shopping centre. The men would walk on one side of the road and the women on the other, looking across at each other and many coming together to form couples. The practice died out in the 1950s, but the pub retains the name to pay homage to the old tradition.

The building is a wedge-shaped brick building, with a date stone showing that it was built in 1901. The pub is reasonably sized, not as large or as impressive as some of the chain’s other historic buildings, but its age gives it a certain amount of character.

Quite unusually, we visited this pub twice. The first was back in May, however we realised we hadn’t taken enough usable photos to include in our review; a second visit in December allowed us to take more photos. On our first visit, the pub was painted a rather unpleasant shade of yellow, and also featured red, blue and brown walls to turn it into an abominable mixture of clashing colours. At some point between our visits the pub has been redecorated, and painted in more neutral green and brown tones.

The pub is L-shaped, with a number of smaller seating areas decorated with fireplaces and bookshelves. Tables are plentiful and well spaced out, and there’s a number of booths and banquette seating throughout.

At the side of the pub is an incredibly small beer garden, probably more aptly described as a smoking yard given that it is paved over and only has four small tables.

The toilets are modern and well decorated, taking the chain’s standard design of a dark marble sink area and grey tiles and combining it with decorative patterned tiles on the mirror wall.
